Council has scored a home run after teaming up with the Queensland Government and securing $1.25 million in funding for Logan sporting clubs. The partnership, which will see a combined $1.6 million in funding allocated across Logan, will enable vital upgrades for local facilities which house some of Logan's most promising sports stars. Health, Sport and Community Services Committee Chairperson, Councillor Phil Pidgeon (Division 9) said the Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Program had allowed Council to apply, and successfully secure, funding across five divisions. "Logan is home to many past, present and upcoming sports stars," he said. "Whether it is football, soccer, netball or otherwise, we need to ensure that we are providing the necessary facilities to aid our local sports clubs and can cater for increasing demands. "The $1.6 million funding will assist in the construction of numerous new amenity blocks and provide the necessary funds to improve the safety of facilities across the city." Cr Pidgeon said the funding was not only a win for local residents, but for the whole city, with visitors across Australia travelling to Logan for regional, state and national competitions. "The upgrades will enable our local clubs to meet recommended standards and cater for future population growth," he said. Cr Pidgeon said the important role sport played in community development and the physical benefits to individuals was undeniable. "Local sporting clubs are a great way to build friendships, foster sportsmanship and give young and old throughout the city the opportunity to get involved and be part of a team." "Our city's success stories prove sport is well and truly an integral part of our way of life in Logan," he said. Project work will commence 1 January 2012 and is expected to be completed by 31 December 2012.
